Gastrointestinal System
Excerpts from previous naturopathy assignment HLT60512.ย Briefly describe the role of the gastrointestinal system (including motility, secretion, and movement of food, digestion and absorption)?
The stomach has motile movements which propel food to the duodenum, its role in digestion is limited as it consists mainly of hydrochloric acid (HCL) and pepsin. Chyme is passed through the Pyloric sphincter to into the duodenum where pancreatic enzymes and bile further break down the food. Smooth muscle contractions of the small intestine absorb the water soluble and fat soluble vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins. Lipids are sent to the lymphatic system for further metabolism. By products of digested foods get sent through the hepatic portal vein to the liver where impurities and toxins are further metabolised. In the bowel, water, and some vitamins are absorbed, and fermented by products contribute to growth of good bacteria which can counteract any โbadโ bacteria present in the bowel. Good bacteria are essential for healthy immune function and other roles in the body. Final waste products are then excreted in the stool.
